Every time I walk beneath a eucalyptus tree, I reach out to touch its smooth trunk. The bark peels back to reveal unexpected colors beneath, and no two trees are ever quite the same. Over the years, these trees have become part of the Southern California experience.
They are loved by some, criticized by others, and impossible to ignore. Their scent drifts through canyons after rain. Their silhouettes rise above trails and hillsides. Familiar and distinct, they seem to belong here and apart from it at the same time.
I painted this grove at sunset, when the last light settled onto the trunks and turned them gold. Standing among these trees, I found myself thinking about belonging. About the ways a place shapes us, and the ways we shape it in return. The eucalyptus offers no answers. It simply stands in the fading light, rooted here, yet carrying memories of a far away land.
