This was my favorite view from my week in Yosemite. I painted it right there first, with Half Dome rising in the distance, steady and timeless. Being in front of it settles something in you. The granite held the morning light, warm and solid, the kind of rock you want to press your hand against just to feel it.
Painting on location helped me take in everything that mattered. The air smelled of pine, warm in the sun and still chilly in the breeze. The trees were bare, holding their place before spring. That feeling stayed with me long after I packed up. Things are always turning, even when you cannot see it yet.
