Several times a month, my dog and I take multi day trips into the mountains and forests, whether backpacking or camping. This trip was different. We stayed at a bed and breakfast and wandered the trails through this part of California.
I realized the grasslands were already dry by late spring, but they created an amazing shimmer that evening. The little ball of sun felt like a magician, making the land luminous. I stood there looking west, soaking in that glorious light, as my dog and I turned gold along with the land. Without realizing it, we were there to complete the show.
I stood there long after I stopped painting, watching the light slowly fade. Part of me wanted it to last a little longer. But that's the thing about sunsets. They never do. There's something comforting about that. Every evening's performance comes to an end. Another one returns the next day. Never the same. Always worth watching.
