I returned to the Kern River this winter and painted along its banks beneath the southern Sierra Nevada. Ten summers ago this river threw me from a raft and pulled me into its rapids. I remember tumbling under the water, terrified, until I stopped fighting and let the current carry me to shore. I have learned to flow with life ever since.
Rivers hold many faces. They can rage, they can calm, they can humble you, and they can restore you. They seem to meet you exactly where you are.
When I stood there with my easel that afternoon, the water was clear and steady, light moving across its surface, the canyon quiet in winter green. The river that once showed me its power was now offering something else. Peace. And that was exactly what I needed.
It’s something you can sit with at the end of the day, or in the morning before things begin. It lives well in a hallway, a bedroom, or a space where you want to slow down and come back to yourself.
